Aliens and Owls and Bugs, Oh My!

Well, I guess it's time to update you on the cupcake project, huh?

Last Monday morning, Natalie and her husband Daniel came over so that Natalie could help me with the 150+ cupcakes I'd volunteered to bake and decorate for Battle Company Chili Day. At 10 am we got started on the first 24: neon green aliens. In hindsight, I wish we hadn't done the aliens because the baking and construction was so complicated, they took all day. Lesson learned - do the easy ones first and save time. The boys were off work that day and played Mario Super Sluggers on the Nintendo Wii while we slaved away in the kitchen, all of us happily snacking away on the cupcakes that didn't make the "cut." They stayed until 7 pm. The next morning, the boys were at work so Jericho and I picked up Natalie for another fun day of baking and frosting. We got the Mama and Baby Owls done, and got the Creepy Crawlies mostly done. After Natalie left, I continued working to finish the bugs and to get some of the next day's cupcakes baked and ready for decorating. They were due at the Company by 1:00 Wednesday afternoon, so I picked Natalie up early and we decided to simply frost the remaining cupcakes to save time. All in all, they turned out pretty well and were very well-received. We were both especially happy with the bugs! And I was so glad to have help. I finished with my sanity intact.

The process and end result:

Alien bodies ready for dipping

Aliens!

Mama & Baby Owls

Natalie tracing bug bodies with chocolate

A beetle

Scorpion

Ticks
Ant
Spider
In all, we did 140 cupcakes. Another Battle Company wife made cupcakes too, so there was one for every soldier. Did I have a great time? Indeed I did. Would I do that many again? Heck no.
