No Coupons for You!

Gas is expensive.

No, really. When you discover that gas here costs about 2.3 times higher than American fuel, thanks to European tax, you're shocked. It's priced at roughly 1.28 (euro) for unleaded, which converts to $1.63. But then when you realize gas here is sold by the liter instead of the gallon...that's when you really feel it hit your wallet.

Especially when you're paying cash for it. The Army has certain contracts in place with local gas companies that allow Army personnel and families to purchase gas liter coupons, essentially giving us fuel at a discount. You buy a book of 100 or 200 liters, each page marked in amounts of five or ten. You decide how much gas you need, fill out the appropriate number of coupons, pump the gas and use the coupons like cash at the pay station. Considering the current price of a book of 100 liters is $88, it's a pretty good deal.

So when your husband's truck registration expires while you're in the States, resulting in the revocation of gas coupon privileges until it's renewed, and you're paying 20 euro twice a week to put half a tank of gas in the car...

Sucks to be you.

  1. I'm almost there. I used my last coupons the other day and only had enough to fill it up 3/4 full. However, my windshield has come in so I just need to get my butt in gear and have the windshield replaced!
